Painting Overview
Jackdaw Barbara reflects Igor Shulman’s fascination with individuality in nature, portraying the unique character and subtle personality of a single jackdaw within its serene environment.
Artist’s Insight
If you thought that I was an ornithologist, then you were mistaken. I am an artist. I just like the birds. I like a lot more in this world. But the most beloved is nature and all of which it consists. And birds are an integral part of nature, and therefore our life. I am especially interested in their portraits. It seems to us why all the birds of the same species are less or less the same. I believe you, this is a fallacy. Just like people, like other animals, they are strictly individual. With its physical characteristics and nuances of mental organization.
Artwork Description
In The World of Birds. Jackdaw Barbara, Igor Shulman explores his fascination with individuality in nature. At first glance, the painting is a simple close-up of a jackdaw. Yet the artist pushes beyond ornithology or species study to reveal the bird as a singular being with its own presence and character.
The jackdaw fills most of the canvas. Its dark feathers, layered with heavy impasto, are brushed in strokes of black and blue that give them both texture and movement. Against a plain, pale backdrop, the bird emerges with heightened clarity, its upward gaze carrying a quiet intensity. The beak, slightly open, holds a moment of alertness that seems suspended in time.
The atmosphere is contemplative rather than dramatic. The bird is neither symbol of menace nor decoration, but an individual subject, as distinct in its expression as any human portrait. Shulman's approach blends realism with expressive freedom, showing both the physical form and the intangible mystery of life.
The painting resonates as a meditation on observation and presence. Just as no two people are identical, no two birds are the same. Shulman invites the viewer to notice this truth, and to see in the jackdaw a reflection of individuality within the shared fabric of nature.
