Painting Overview

Quadriptych for a Bar Interior is a four-panel oil painting Igor Shulman completed in 2008, composed as one continuous café scene spread across four separate canvases. Read from left to right, the work moves through a sequence of loosely connected moments: a woman in a dark coat and gloves caught mid-turn in the foreground of the first panel; a man and a woman seated apart at neighboring tables, each absorbed in their own activity, in the second; a lit doorway with two figures meeting near the entrance, and two more women seated at a table in the foreground, in the third; and, in the fourth, a couple leaning toward each other in conversation, smiling, at a small round table.

Across all four canvases, the setting stays consistent — wooden ladder-back chairs, tables covered in the same bright orange cloth, tall paned windows, and walls in muted violet-grey and near-black. This repetition of props and architecture is what unites the four separate paintings into a single panoramic composition, while the shifting light, from bright daylight in the first two panels to the deep shadow of the third and warmer tones in the fourth, gives the sequence its own rhythm. The figures range from solitary and self-contained to paired and engaged, and placed side by side the four panels read as a study of the different registers of company and solitude that coexist within a single café interior.

Shulman’s brushwork is expressive and economical throughout, built from broad, visible strokes rather than fine detail, with color and light doing much of the descriptive work. As an original oil painting on canvas, the quadriptych is offered as one work from Private Collection No. 1, sold only as the complete set of four panels.

Exhibition History

Shortly after its completion, Quadriptych for a Bar Interior was installed in a Prague bar, where the complete four-panel composition formed part of the interior for several years. Contemporary photographs document the paintings displayed in their original setting, illustrating how the four canvases function together as a continuous visual narrative within the space.
