A Short Silence is actually one of my favorite works in your portfolio, as it bridges painterly expression with an anchor of natural representation.
The blood red cock’s comb is beautifully modeled with red-violet hues, which travel in small bits into the contrasting white background.
I also enjoy the brush/knife strokes which provide layered and scumbled variation. The broad swath of gestural color in the bottom of the piece suggests a body attached to the bird’s head, as well as imparts a sense of movement.
The tilt of the neck and opposing slant of the comb counter each other in a pleasing s-curve. While the large proportion of the head, filling up the picture plane, could create a psychological mood of domination or aggression, the startled eyes of the subject are more inquisitive or imploring of the viewer.
The accompanying artist’s quote is an interesting insight into the reference to silence in the painting’s title. The splattering of red made me wonder if the silence signaled was the ultimate and perhaps violent silencing of the living creature, but on reflection the moment before an explosion has greater potential and breadth within the human- and animal- life experience.
The large scale of the piece no doubt imparts an even more urgent and commanding physical presence.
